New ski lifts in the Portes du Soleil

This year we have 3 new ski lifts currently being installed throughout the Portes du Soleil, for the coming 2012/2013 ski season.

Morzine is replacing the old and slow Troncs chairlift with a new high-speed six seater chair. This lift starts at a collection of restaurants and runs up to the Nyon area which has a snowpark and several great runs, including the fantastic red from the top of Pointe de Nyon.

The Morgins lift company is installing a new high speed lift to replace Les Bochasses, which was a very old T-bar drag lift. This lift is in the area between Morgins and Champoussin, it too has several great pistes that always used to be very under used and quiet because of the cranky old lift.

As we reported earlier in the month Avoriaz is busy replacing the big old cable car that runs from the bottom of Prodains up to the resort, the old cable car only had a capacity of 400 people an hour. But the new 3S cable car system will have a capacity between 2000 and 2400 people an hour.

The 3S system is the latest ski lift technology, which combines the benefits of large cable car with the constantly moving chair lift system. Avoriaz will have 12 cars with 35 seats in each, the cars rest on 2 cables with provides a more stable ride.

The lift station at the top is also being completely rebuilt to provide improved entry and exit. Although we are going to have to wait until mid-February 2013 to try out this new lift, but we are sure it will be worth the wait.

Family Friendly Les Gets

FAMILY FRIENDLY SKIING IN LES GETS, FRANCE

Les Gets has received the review below from femalefirst.co.uk which was looking at the best ski resorts in the world.

Part of the larger Portes du Soleil ski area, Les Gets is a small, friendly resort that offers over 650m of slopes catering for everyone - every Thursday morning there is a traditional market where the local farmers sell their products. In the evening holidaymakers can enjoy a glass of wine in one of the bars around the floodlit outdoor ice rink in the centre of the village.

New ski lift at Les Prodains

The high tech new ski lift at Les Prodains is due to open for February 16th just in time for the half term holidays in 2013. This brand new cable car is replacing the connection between Morzine and Avoriaz and should make things much easier and faster for skiers who are staying in Morzine and wish to ski in Avoriaz.

The old cable car took 60 standing passengers every 15 minutes in two cabins. The new lift which is one of only 6 in the world will have 12 cabins carrying 35 passengers each. There will be space for
24 of these people to sit down in each of these new ski lifts.

With the new ski lift taking just 4 minutes to reach it’s destination this will take the total amount of passengers carried per hour from 500 to 2000! The ancient stations at the top and bottom of the lift are also being updated to allow for easier access by skiers. You can read the Dauphine newspaper’s full article about the new lift here where they say there will also be lighting and radio in the comfortable cabins as well as a gps positioning system!
