Fifth & final play off match for Morzine Penguins on Saturday

The Morzine Avoriaz Penguins were triumphant in Wednesday’s play off match against Gap in Marseille. This was the fourth match of five and brings the score to 2-2, meaning the fifth and final match, played at home on Saturday, will be the decider.

March Skiing

So many great ski holidays at the Hotel Christiania in Les Gets are missed out on because too many people think that ski season ends when March rolls in. Even though this may be true in terms of some of the lower altitudes, the Les Gets resort is quite close to Mt. Blanc and it benefits from this proximity with a micro-climate all its own. During this time ski season is actually wonderful because there is sufficient snow cover between Christmas and Easter. As this picture taken in Les Gets yesterday shows we still have lots of snow with clear blue skies.

If you have never been to Les Gets its great place for your family ski holiday from restaurants near the slopes to pubs and bars, grills, pizzerias and brassieres, a Les Gets ski holiday will not see you go hungry. There are also a good number of shops where you can find souvenirs as well as shops in which to hire equipment. A few ardent skiers that come back yearly may have their own equipment but others need to rely on hiring equipment during their stay here in Les Gets.

It is true that we are nearing the end of the ski season even in the French Alps but it is not too late to take advantage of some amazing deals and enjoy a bit of time away from the everyday monotony of the workday life. There is no lovelier scenery on earth and while the weather is not too awfully cold the snow cover is still sufficient for some amazing lessons from expert British instructors. You may be spending your holiday in France and French may be the language used about town, but you can be confident that your ski lessons will be taught in English. When in Les Gets, ski by day and play by night. Isn’t this what a ski holiday is all about after all?

It's certainly getting warmer in Les Gets this week, with freeze, thaw conditions every day. While its currently 4 degree in the village, its forecast to drop to -11 tonight so its still very much the winter season.

Piste conditions remain very good and you certainly need to remember to bring your sun screen if your coming to Les Gets in the next few days.

Going to France? Get a breathalyser

British holidaymakers driving to France this year should be warned they need to carry breathalyser kits in their cars to comply with new laws.

The gadgets, which allow drivers to test their own alcohol levels to make sure they are under the drink-drive limits, will be obligatory for all motorists in France from July.

The French drink-driving limit is 50mg, which is 30mg lower than in the UK. Drivers found with between 50mg and 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood can be fined €135 and gain six points on their licence. Drivers with more alcohol face fines of €4,500 and a two-year prison sentence.

Drivers caught without a kit - available from ferry and train terminals from £1 to £2 - could be fined €11, although police are not expected to start enforcing the fines until November.

The "Les Menuires Seven"

We came across this article written by our friends at the on line edition of Yodel Magazine and thought it may be of interest to our followers.

The 'Les Menuires Seven' have shown the power of the seasonaire today by barricading themselves into a luxury chalet in a protest over pay.

Yodel just spoke to Aanya, one of the seven. She told us that at the beginning of February they applied for season work with a local tour operator in Les Menuires, Three Valleys after seeing various chalet and childcare roles advertised on a ski forum. They now claim not to have been paid and their positions have been terminated after just one week of employment. Many people in Les Menuires and the neighbouring resort of Riberty appear to have joined the cause and the group have created a Facebook page to promote their plight.

The group told Yodel that they have job offers stating their job descriptions, rate of pay and employment period and five of the seven headed to Les Menuires around 3 weeks ago, in advance of the busy half term week to take up their new positions for the rest of the season. It's claimed that after half term a representative of their employer visited the team in their staff chalet and they were asked to leave their accommodation immediately as their positions had been terminated. She says that the justification from their employer was that there weren't enough guests to sustain their employment. When asked for their wages owed they claim that they were denied payment.

The group have taken matters into their own hands by barricading themselves into an empty luxury chalet operated by their former employer. Supporting locals are looking after them and they are in contact with the owner, who must surely be hoping for a speedy resolution as the chalet is expecting new guests this Saturday!

Yodel contacted the Les Menuires chalet company at the centre of the claims made by the Les Menuires 7 group. It appears that no one from the company is available to comment at this time.

Members of the Les Menuires Seven were interviewed on BBC breakfast radio in Norwich this morning and Yodel has watched their Facebook followers grow from 600 to 1147 as we finish this article!

Strange questions asked to the Tourist office in Les Gets this season

We all switch off a little bit when we are on holiday, but judging by these questions that have been collated by the Les Gets tourist office some of us switch off a little bit more than others...

“How long does the 5 hour pass last?”
“How much snow will there be in February?" (Phone enquiry made to the tourist office in October)
"How do we find the chalet that we have rented? No, we don't have the address or the name of the owner...” (Panic stricken holidaymakers who had just arrived in resort with no idea where they were staying)
"Where are the toilets?"
"Take the elevator and go down to the next floor."
"OK, but how do we get there?"
"Do you have a map for the snow shoe trails? Is it the same route in the summer?”
“At what altitude is the highest point in the resort? Can you increase it?”

Maybe subzero temperatures make the brain cells work a bit slower...

There are some great conditions in resort just now with 115 cm of snow at village level, 175 cm at the mid station and 230cm at the top of the mountain.

Valentine's dinner in Les Gets

Some of our guest's may been in for a Valentine's dinner with a difference tonight as they have a romantic dinner in the Mont Chery bubble on Valentine’s day.

The cabins, decorated to provide a warm, romantic atmosphere, one course will be served each time they pass through the lift station. It will be a new and original way to celebrate this romantic occasion with the added bonus of a stunning night view over the village.

For those going up the mountain tonights menu is as follows.
Starter : Feuillantine of Corsican figatelli with figs and myrtle cream, served with wild nettle panacotta, peanuts and spices.

Main Course : Filet of Grouper with Indian spices or Filet of Ostrich served with a creamy brandy and cèpes sauce, accompanied with a marmalade of apple and courgettes, Darphin potatoes and roasted tomatoes.

Dessert: Chocolate and honey fondant served with a rose scented coulis and mini toffee apple.

As usual the restaurant in the Hotel Christiania will be open for those in resort with Children or who just cannot be bothered with the whole commercialised day!

The temperature remains at a day time high of -13 in resort and -20 at the top of the mountain.

We still have 85cm of snow outside the door of the hotel and everyone should have a good weeks skiing.

- Get a team of 3 people that you work with (at least one girl per team) to represent your company. Choose any mix of disciplines from ski, snowboard and telemark.

- Bring €15 for your team registration to the BASS Morzine & Les Gets office at 71, Rue de Telepherique (next door to StarSki) before 6:00pm on Wednesday 21st March 2012.

More sub-zero temperatures and busy roads for half-term start

Travelling to and from Les Gets this weekend will prove difficult with continual sub-zero temperatures across France coinciding with the start of English and French school holidays. Heavy traffic is expected on Saturday and temperatures of -13° C across all of France

With near on record lows (-26° in Val d’Isere, -23° in Chamonix) for a February last weekend, temperatures have slightly edged their way up the scale but it remains around -10 in Les Get, but the cold front is due to persist well into this coming weekend. The recent cold snap in ski resorts has left holiday makers stranded with frozen diesel and flat batteries.

Breakdown services have been working overtime with a huge number of call-outs (some 500 in 3 days) due to the freezing temperatures. In some instances cars have had to be left for up to 24hrs before being recovered.

For those coming to the Hotel Christiania with a diesel car; fill your tank with diesel treated to at least -20 and add an anti-waxing (anti-figeant in French) additive for extra measure – but don’t over use the additive as this won’t be good for your engine.

French traffic news website the Bison Fute recommends avoiding the ski road rush by planning your journey around the 10am to 4pm peak travel times.

The count down in Les Gets has started to the busiest week of the year during the English half term week, which this week runs alongside the first week of the 4 weeks of the French school holidays.

Temperatures remain very cold in resort so while it has not snowed for a week we are getting reports of powder conditions up the mountain.

With the continued cold conditions in Les Gets (it's currently -15 again this morning) we keep having to knock the icicles off the roof as the guests sometime leave the windows open in their rooms at the Hotel Christiania when they are having a shower.

The staff keep knocking the snow and ice off the roof as you would certainly not want to be under that snow when it falls off the roof.

Conditions in Les Gets and the Portes du Soleil remain excellent with 85cm on the lower slopes and 220cm at the top of the mountain outside the hotel.

Some thank the staff at the hotel, some contact the office in Scotland and others leave trip advisor reviews however this week we had our first review on Facebook.

A second visit to a great hotel, as per last year there was great food on offer, top hospitality from the staff and to top it all this year the snow was fantastic. To try and find a better hotel for similar money with half board with transfers would be a real task in the Alps, congratulations to Derek and the team for giving us another great holiday, sure we will be back next season for more of the same. Following yesterdays snow Les Gets and the Portes su Soleil open the month with excellent conditions as can be seen from these images from the Les Gets and Hotel Christiania web cams taken this afternoon at 1.30pm local time.

The resort staff report 85cm of snow at the door of the hotel at 1172m, 185cm at the mid point of 1500m and 210cm at the summit of 1800m.

Conditions remain good all over the Portes du Soleil and this is certainly a good year to be in the Alps

While the football transfer window slammed shut last night until the summer, remember at the Hotel Christiania in Les Gets we can offer you return transfers to and from Geneva for 70€ per person.

At present due to French and Swiss bureaucracy we are using ski transfers to get our guests to resort but you should still be collected within 1 hour of your arrival in Geneva and 1 hour later you will be in Les Gets.

Which Hotel Christiania?

Our reception got a surprise this morning when 4 gentlemen walked in looking for their room, which was not showing on the hotel manifest.

On asking for a copy of their reservation it turns out they had booked the Hotel Christiania in Saas Fee, thinking they were booked in with ourselves. As the hotel is fully booked this weekend there was little we could do to help them but that adds to the list of strange requests for this winter, including 2 clients who have booked the hotel thinking we were in Val d'Isere and one who was looking for a transfer when he was booked into the Christiania in La Clusaz.

I wonder how many more of these we will get before the end of the season.

Just back from another fantastic trip to the Christiania. The atmospher is second to none, it is in a fantastic location on the slopes and the management cannot do enough to make sure your trip is simply brilliant. Les Gets was shut one day so as early as 8.30am mini bus was ready to take us to Avoriaz only twenty minutes away. Apres Ski tea is fantastic, bar fun and then huge well cooked dinner. Food is of a high quality far better than two star would suggest. Sauna and Hot Tubs add to the apres ski entertainment. Above all else the fun atmospher is hard to beat and whatever the weather i feel guests are bound to have a fantastic time and great value for money.

Get fit for skiing - Week 10

Well now its December and the staff are all set to arrive at the hotel Christiania in the next few days the count down to the start of the ski season 2011/12 is just about complete, we have in association with Steve Bonthrone, a personal trainer from Perth put together a series of 10 exercises to help get you fit to get the most out of your skiing. If you search for Fitness on this blog you can find the other nine of the 10 exercises that have already been published. We trust you have enjoyed the exercises and would welcome any feedback here or on our facebook page.

10. Back Raises on the ball

You will probably be familiar with this exercise as well. Lie in the prone position with the waist on top of the ball. For the beginner, place the knees on the ball and for the advanced exerciser, extend the legs and push up on the toes. Place the finger tips by the side of the head and raise the chest up, pushing the stomach onto the ball and then return to the starting position. Breathe out as you rise up and breathe in as you return. Do 3 sets of 15 reps. As with any exercise using the ball, perform the repetitions slowly and with control for full effect.

9. The Plank on the ball

Most of you will be familiar with this exercise or ‘The Bridge’ as it is otherwise known. If you find this one difficult, try the exercise on the floor or with the knees on the floor. Place the forearms on the ball, the toes on the floor and keep the body straight. Aim to hold the position for around 20-30 seconds then repeat another 2 times.

This week Steve states "We’ve started to work on the base strength of the leg muscles, now we start to work on dynamic strength. This exercise will help improve speed and agility. This will help you get the most out of your days in the mountains"

8. Squat Jumps

Following on from the Squat Thrust, try the jump. Starting in the squat position with the hips parallel to the floor, jump up as high as you can, keeping the legs straight and land in the squat position and then straightaway, jump again. You should aim for 15 jumps non-stop, rest for 1min and perform another 2 sets the same. It is very important that you keep the knees relaxed on landing to avoid injury.

We’ve started to work on the base strength of the leg muscles, now we start to work on dynamic strength. This exercise will help improve speed and agility.

7. Squat Thrusts

Start with the hands on the floor, legs fully extended and body raised. Using the core muscles, fix the upper body and pelvic area and solely use the legs to ‘jump in’, bringing the knees into the chest and jump back out to the starting position. Jumping in and out counts as 1 rep. Do 3 sets of 15 reps with 1min rest between sets. To advance the exercise, try using timed intervals such as 30 seconds or 1min with a short recovery between sets. Aim to breathe out as you bring the legs in and inhale as you take the legs out. As an alternative, try the split position with one knee into the chest and other leg extended and swap over to count as a rep.

This week we are following up from last Saturday's ball excersie.Steve says "This is taking a basic exercise and making it harder by performing it on an unstable surface therefore targetting the core as well. Start by sitting on the ball and then walk the feet forward whilst forming a lying position."

6. Sit Ups on Ball

Find a comfortable position with the lower back on top of the ball, or near to. Position the hands on the thighs and slide them to the knees. To advance this, either place the hands across the chest or supporting the head. Aim for 3 sets of 10-15reps with 30secs-1min rest between sets

Children's Playroom:
We know how important it is for children to be kept occupied. The hotel's kid's playroom caters for all age groups and craft materials, books, paints, board games, video games and movies are all available. The playroom is located off the lounge / bar area so you will never be too far to check on the progress of that noisy game of snakes and ladders or the suspicious silence that occurs when the latest movie is played.

Children's Meals:
A high tea is served at 1800 hours for children aged 11 and under. We aim to provide a well balanced meal to suit children's tastes.

Village Facilities:
The village of Les Gets is very well equipped for children of all ages. A few of the attractions include an adventure park and children's swimming lake in the summer and an out door skating rink and children's beginner ski park are very popular in winter. Hotel Christiania Crèche

The Hotel Christiania will again be offering a nanny service for ski season 2011/2012 for children aged between 4 months and 2 years.

The nanny service will again operate on a strict ratio of 1 nanny per 2 infants aged 4 months to 12 month or one nanny per 3 infants aged 13 months to 2 years and the hotel's fully qualified nanny will look after the children from 9am through to 5pm when the adults return from skiing in the afternoon.

During the day they have creative play with toys, building blocks as well as the nanny reading books and singing songs to your child. They will also be taken out in their buggies through the village for fresh air and play in the snow when the weather is good.

On your arrival at the Christiania she will spend time with parents and guardians to go over dietary requirements and routines to ensure that the children will be well looked after when the adults are skiing.

Full days are from 9am to 5pm and include lunch with half days being either 9am to 12.30 or 13.30 to 17.00.

Bar in Les Gets changes its name

Thanks to our Friends at Yodel magazine we have been told that the Dublin Inn has changed its name.

Don't worry... Jim, Kath and the team are still there. But there is something distinctly different about the Dublin Inn nowadays. It's name has changed for a start! The Dublin Inn is currently being re-branded as Kc's Sports Bar. 'There was often some confusion in Les Gets' owner Jim Connolly tells me. 'Between us as the Dublin Inn and the Irish Bar in the centre of the village, our customers sometimes got confused!' So the new name, new logo and some serious re-development of the bar ought to fix that!

JC's Sports Bar will re-open on 25th November with a whole new bar, loads of sporting memorabilia and two enormous 55 inch 3D televisions. This means that you'll be able to watch any football or sport that is screened in 3D at JC's Sports Bar - they'll even provide the 3D glasses for you to wear too! And if you'd rather watch a game in 2D, there's still four huge regular TV's for you. If watching all that sport inspires you to get involved, there are 2 pool tables, a dart board and a babyfoot table.

It's all change in the kitchen too - Paul Denicolo (from A&D in Morzine) is taking over! There'll be a fresh and exciting menu of bar snacks and bar meals, available from 4pm until closing time during the week and from 12noon until closing time on Saturdays and Sundays. There's a take away option too.

So everyone is invited to the official opening from 8pm onwards on Friday 25th November! And the events keep coming - it's Jim's Birthday Bash on 1st December and then there'll be a free weekly music quiz every Sunday, with the winner proudly carrying home a bottle of champagne for their efforts. Happy 'Hour' in the bar starts at 10pm and lasts until 1am, during which a pint of Stella is just €4, a spirit and mixer is just €3, a glass of house wine is €3 and cocktails are just €5 each.

This week Steve points out "that in addition to strengthen the leg muscles, it’s important to strengthen the core stomach muscles. The exercises over the following weeks will help improve balance, posture and ultimately help you ski more efficiently."

5. Sit on Ball

This exercise will help strengthen your core muscles to improve your posture and balance, which in turn will improve your ability to twist and change direction more efficiently. Simply, sit on the ball and keep the torso in an upright position. You can progress this exercise by lifting one foot off the ground at a time and then lift both feet up. This can be a tricky exercise when progressing so either come and see me or your trainer to guide you through balance exercises

4. Wall Squats

The exercise involves sitting in a squat position against a wall with the knees bent at a 90 degree angle and keeping the back straight. Aim to hold each initially for 5secs and try to increase to 20-30secs. Do this 5 times

Get fit for Skiing - Week 3

As we count down the start to the ski season there are now only 8 weeks until we open the Christiania in Les Gets for season 2011/12, we have in association with Steve Bonthrone, a personal trainer from Perth put together a series of 10 exercises to help get you fit for the up coming season. if you search for Fitness on this blog you can find the past exercises and we will publish a fresh routine every Saturday until the 3rd of December.

This week Steve said "It’s now time to try and increase the duration of the cardiovascular exercise to 45mins each time. The intensity should be kept at a moderately challenging level for now, with endurance being the key. Try to use music as a distraction while you do this exercise as boredom can creep in quite easily so stick your favourite tunes on and go for it!"

3. Step Ups

This is an excellent exercise which works all the muscles in the lower part of the body, the ‘core’ muscles in the stomach and offers lots of variations for progression. Use a step or platform that’s almost knee height in order to work all the muscles equally. Aim to perform 3 sets of 15 reps and alternate the leading leg. To progress, you can try holding dumbbells by the side, hold an object straight out in front of the body or hold the object, or simply raise the hands, above the head. These will make the postural muscles work harder. Alternatively, lower the height of the step and try going faster for, say, 30secs, 45secs or 1min with rest between sets.

Get Fit for Skiing - week 2

With 9 weeks until the start of the season in Les Gets we have in association with Steve Bonthrone, a personal trainer from Perth put together a series of 10 exercises to help get you fit for the up coming season. We published exercise 1 last week and aim to give you a new routine every Saturday until the 3rd of December.

Steve states "To accompany these exercises, you should be looking at doing some cardiovascular exercise to increase stamina. Ultimately, you’re likely to be skiing for around 2 hours or more at any one time so we need to fit to keep going. Try walking, jogging, cycling or the crosstrainer in the gym for about 30mins and try that 3 times per week or more."

2. The Lunge

Start by kneeling on the floor and place one foot on the floor so that there is a 90 degree bend in the knees. Push up to a standing position, lifting the chest and gently pushing the hip forward on the back leg and repeat. Aim for 10-15 reps then swap sides and do 2-3 sets. If you feel wobbly while performing the exercise, move the back foot to hip width or wider. This exercise will work all muscles in the legs.

New View from the Christiania dining room

Work has been on going all summer at the Hotel Marmotte as after 7 years they finally put some accommodation above their spa and sauna.

While there is still a bit of work to be done, there has not been as much impact on our views of Mont Chery at the slope end of the dining room as we first thought. When the work is complete the view will be improved as it looks as if the building will have a nice stone finish.

With 10 weeks until the start of the season in Les Gets we have in association with Steve Bonthrone, a personal trainer from Perth put together a series of 10 exercises to help get you fit for the up coming season.

Steve states "that to get the most enjoyment out of your ski holiday by doing some fitness training. Most skiers will experience a burn in their thighs as well as aching calves, lower back, inner thighs and bum after the first day skiing. To combat that, we need to work on a combination of strength, endurance and balance exercises. Here are a series of exercises to add to your routine"

1. The Squat

Sit back through the hips until the thighs are parallel to the floor and rise up keeping the knees relaxed at the top. Aim for 3 sets of 15reps. This works all the muscles in the thighs, bum, calves and stomach. A weight can be added if desired

Les Gets - The Green ski resort!

Les Gets Golf Course has just been awarded the ISO 14001 environmental certificate, making it the third organisation in Les Gets to achieve the award.

The ISO 14001 is given after an audit that assesses environmental impact and goals for the future. The Sagets lift company received the certificate in 2008, with the Les Gets Tourist Office gaining theirs in 2010.
Les Gets is constantly looking at ways to improve the environment and has introduced projects such as free public transport, local businesses fuelled by geothermal energy, pocket ashtrays to reduce littering on the mountains and biodegradable oil in snow grooming vehicles

So while you may not want to think of Green when your skiing, skiing in Les Gets does not cost the earth and will ensure we have snow for years to come.

The official Portes du Soleil iPhone application makes you the master of our French-Swiss ski area. This new application contains everything you could possibly need to know about our cross-border ski network: an interactive piste map detailing slopes that are open, skiers’ GPS location on the slopes in real time, the weather forecast and snow conditions, restaurants on the slopes, webcams, emergency numbers and other useful information. You can also watch the best film clips about the ski area, browse the events diary, make full use of the augmented reality software to explore the Portes du Soleil mountains, and make use of the bespoke route planner for an ideal ski back to the Hotel Christiania.

As many of you turn your calender to September this morning you will also be counting down the days until the start of the European ski season.

With 3 months to go if your planning a group trip please call our office NOW. Yesterday one day at the end of January had over 60 people looking to stay in the Christiania at the same time, over 3 potential bookings.

Last season was certainly a success at the Hotel Christiania, Les Gets despite the lack of snow for most of the season, which effected most of the Alps. While we had great early season snow as per the picture below from December, the clear blue sky remained for most of February and March, Credit must go to the resort for keeping the pistes in such good conditions in challenging times which enabled Les Gets to stay open until the first week in April.

The staff certainly worked hard to look after our guests and this has been reflected in the large number of positive reviews the hotel received last season. Snowy St Andrews Day in Scotland...

It's certainly a St Andrews day to remember as the snow keeps falling in Scotland. Yesterday only one member of the Ski Activity team made it to the office however we are up to full strength today.

The picture to the right is from Glenalmond college, which is 4 miles from the office showing the level of snow in Perthshire.

Hotel Christiania in Les Gets
If this early snow has got you in the mood its not too late to go skiing in the Portes Du Soleil on the 11th of December when the Hotel Christiania opens it's doors for the season and we will be transferring our guests to Ardent which links to Avoriaz until all the lifts open in Les Gets on the 18th of December. Our Web Cams are showing good early snow in Les Gets and its looking like being a good start to the season.

New Year 2011

The last of our New Year apartments are still available, priced at £500 per person based on 4 sharing with a half board upgrade to the Christiania its a great way to spend the period from Christmas to New Year as these are available from the 26th of December to the 2nd of January 2011.

Half Term - 19th to 26th February 2011

We still have one room available for half term from the 19th to the 26th of February. This is room 23 which is a small double priced at 120€ per person per night. If your a teacher looking to have a great weeks skiing then for 840€ per person this is the solution for you.
